Welcome to the A World of Difference podcast. I'm Lori Adams Brown and this is a podcast for those who are different and want to make a difference. Welcome back to A World of Difference where we explore how values driven leadership and cultural intelligence are the real drivers of the change that we want to see in the world of work. I'm Lori Adams Brown, Executive coach, global Talent strategist and your guide on this journey toward courageous leadership.

00:01:39
Today's topic Integrity. And not just as a buzzword, but as a non negotiable executive discipline in 2025. Because here in the United States, where CEOs are going viral for affairs with their chief people officers at a Coldplay concert, and when government coverups around figures like Jeffrey Epstein point to systemic silence and complicity, we must ask, what is the cost of a lack of integrity at the top? Spoiler it's not just reputational, it's existential coverups and and consequences. Let's just start with what's unfolding in real time here in the US the ongoing revelations around the Jeffrey Epstein investigation and what appears to be an intentional cover up by some of the highest levels of US government are absolutely chilling.

00:02:30
When those with the most power refuse to speak the truth, release the files, be transparent, protect the vulnerable, or even acknowledge their own wrongdoing or at least their complicity, it sends a signal to every other leader you you can get away with it too. Meanwhile, in the private sector, a video of a CEO and a CPO caught having an affair at a Coldplay concert isn't just fodder for gossip. It's a case study and a cultural decay of leadership. These aren't just any leaders. These are the very people charged with stewarding people strategy and setting the ethical tone.

00:03:04
And let's be honest, if we can't trust the people leading our people, who can we trust? We have boards, we have burnout and how the brain comes into play with the neuroscience around. This is something so important we must discuss. We need boards and executives to do three things urgently. If you sit on a board, practice real time risk management.

00:03:25
This means proactively identifying and addressing character risk, not just compliance risk. Say something when you see something. Silence enables these abuse to go on. Whistleblowers are often canaries in the cold mine. Listen to them when they speak up.

00:03:40
Create cultures where integrity and human centered well being thrive, not just values on a wall. Why does this matter? Because burnout, which is epidemic across leadership today, erodes our empathy. And when empathy erodes, so does our ability to notice when something is off. Neuroscience shows us that under chronic stress, the brain develops and defaults into in group thinking.

00:04:02
It seeks comfort, not truth. It avoids conflict. This is the breeding ground for group think and the same psychological patterns that lead to coverups of moral failures. When leadership teams are exhausted, overextended and disconnected from purpose, the risk of unethical behavior skyrockets. And the cost is not just to reputations.

00:04:22
It's to people, to culture, to retention, to stock prices. Integrity is good for business. Why? Well, let's be clear. Integrity isn't just the right thing to do.

00:04:30
It's also good strategy. According to Edelman's 2024 Trust Barometer, 63 of employees say they trust my employer more than the media, government or NGOs. That's a massive opportunity and a massive responsibility. Research from PwC shows that companies with high trust cultures outperform their peers by 286% in total return to shareholders. When you embed truth, transparency and accountability into your leadership model.

00:04:58
Attract and retain top talent or reputational risk. Prove decision making, speed and quality. Build resilience in moments of crisis. Here's the framework I use in executive coaching and culture consulting. The Integrity Framework.

00:05:12
Invest in character based hiring for executives. N. Normalize ethical feedback and 360 reviews. T. Train for trauma informed leadership. E. Establish clear accountability structures at all levels. G. Get transparent with internal communications.

00:05:29
R. Respond publicly and swiftly when breaches occur. I identify values, alignment and performance metrics t track trust data through anonymous feedback tools and yield power when necessary to uphold culture. This framework isn't about perfection, it's about progress and prevention. It matters a great deal to your people. The call to lead differently is something I'm really exploring.

00:05:53
As Jacinda Ardern, one of my leadership heroes, writes in A Different Kind of Power we can be strong and we can be kind. We can lead with compassion and still expect results. But we must have the courage to show show up truthfully. We need more of this kind of power in government and corporations. So let me ask you are you hiring for integrity at the executive level or just for influence?

00:06:15
Are you creating cultures where truth tellers are rewarded or removed? Are you personally modeling transparency and accountability in moments of tension? Because this isn't just about avoiding scandal. It's about building something that lasts. If you're a CEO, an executive director of a nonprofit, a chief people officer, a chro, a board director, a senior leader working in government, education, academia or nonprofit or faith based spaces, and you're ready to create an executive culture rooted in psychological safety, transparency and high integrity performance, let's talk.

00:06:47
I help executive teams get quick wins and long term results with culture, strategy, integrity coaching and talent systems that retain great people and drive resilient performance. Because I myself have worked in spaces where retention strategies didn't exist and it's so expensive to replace people. If somebody makes 200,000 a year in your company or your organization, it will cost 300,000 to replace them. It's about money, but it's also about investing in those people. If you care about the people in your organization and as leaders, I believe we should be caring not just as a value on a wall, but actually exhibiting kind, caring leadership, then this is an opportunity to stand out amongst your competitors, to care about organizational risk, to look around the corner and say integrity matters.

00:07:37
It matters for today. It matters for me as an authentic leader. It matters for the people that I lead. And it matters for your organization. If you work in government, if you work in academia, if you work in a corporation, whether you wherever you're working around the world, Integrity is not something that is going out of style.

00:07:56
We're seeing it front and center here in the United States in our news feeds all throughout the last few days. And so even though talent development is changing, AI is coming in. Is it taking some jobs? Yes. It's also transforming jobs and it's also creating some jobs.

00:08:10
But at the end of the day, with all the changes in talent development that I see here and also a tech company here in Silicon Valley. The one thing that has not changed, and I believe will not change, is that we need people, leaders to have integrity and to do the right thing at the right time. I'd love to know how this resonated with you. We're not expecting perfection, but we are expecting progress and that you put people first wherever you are around the world. I'd love to know how this resonated with you, how that's playing out in your work cultures and in the cultures where you live.

00:08:43
